I'm not a hypochondriac...

I was going through the Facebook Enoji’s this morning to see which one I would choose if I was posting anything. There are SO MANY that I could pick right now. Confused, surprised, scared, determined, blessed, loved…just to name a few.

And then I went down to the deli earlier this morning and the sweet lady who was ringing up my Tylenol said “Are you ok? You look bad.” Gotta love brutal honesty, right?

You ever leave work at night with a horrible stress headache? And it’s no big deal. It’s a headache like you’ve had a hundred times before. I’ve never been a person who handles stress very well. Growing up I would throw up and get migraines that were supposed to be caused from stress. It’s all I’ve ever known, so the headaches and inability to hold food down lately are nothing new. I’ve had CAT scans and MRI’s in the past, but they were always normal.

I woke up on Friday, October 18 with swelling on the left side of my face. It was odd, but I figured it was just some sinus junk because I was having sinus symptoms. I started having numbness on my left side. For lack of a better way to put it, I felt off. My balance is off, I’m walking into things, and make myself dizzy driving. So I went to the doctor last Monday hoping he could help me feel better. He was unsure as to what was going on, so he scheduled me for an MRI on Tuesday. On Wednesday, during our Kidd’s Kids Day show, he called and told me that the MRI showed a mass that wasn’t supposed to be there. Next thing I know a neurosurgeon is calling me to tell me when I’m coming in for an appointment. WTH? He ordered and other MRI (which are $1,300 out of pocket each) and saw that yep. There’s something there that doesn’t belong.

I have a tumor on my brain stem. The tumor itself is benign. They could leave it there if it weren’t on the worst possible spot on my brain. I think. It won’t respond to chemo or radiation, so the only way to get rid of it is surgery. They scheduled it for this Wednesday. I went to see the second neurosurgeon who will operate on me and he postponed the surgery. I wanted to get it done in time to recover for the Kidd’s Kids trip, but there is too much swelling in my brain. I’ve got non-bacterial meningitis that is causing the swelling. Removing the tumor would be too difficult and dangerous with the swelling, so I’m on steroids to try and reduce it. If the steroids work, I will be having surgery to remove the tumor after the Kidd’s Kids trip. The meningitis is here because flakes of the tumor have come loose and mixed with my spinal fluid. So here I am.

Here’s the rundown. This tumor is a genetic defect on my brain. It is slow growing. I’ve had many cat scans and MRI’s before, but it’s not been noticed. It looked like spinal fluid. But it’s grown enough now and is putting enough pressure on my brain stem that it’s a problem. The surgeons will not be able to remove it completely, but they will do what they can. The surgery will last about a 2 hours.  I will spend a couple days in ICU, then a few days in a regular room, and then be released. The recovery time will be at least 2 weeks. The surgery is risky because it can cause nerve damage. I could have paralysis on my face, loss of vision, loss of hearing, and I can’t remember what else.

It’s a lot to take in and I’m not a doctor and I’ve been pretty out of it the past few days, but that’s how I understand it to be. So if you have a second to ask God to please help me out with this dang brain tumor, the tumor and I would both appreciate it.

  49. My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I don't know if you are in to dreams, but there is a belief that your dreams can guide you, they are also a way for your body to communicate its needs to you. If you can get through a book right now, I recommend "She Who Dreams" and you might be interested in talking to a dream therapist at northofeden.com (I think they will do your first one free).

  77. Shannon, My heart and prayers go out to you at this difficult time. I know how devastating new like this can be. I myself back in 2001 found out that I had a cerebral aneurysm on one side of my brain and an acoustic neuroma on the other side (a tumor at the end of the auditory canal) that both required surgery. I ended up having two major head surgeries within 6 months time and subsequently lost all of my hearing in my right ear and most of my vision in my left eye. It was a difficult adjustment to say the least. All the time I was a single mom trying to still raise my 3 year old daughter. Since that time, despite the naysayers, I put myself through Paramedic school then later Physician Assistant school and have learned to adapt and overcome. It was one of the scariest, stressful, and most trying times in my life. I also lost both of my grandfathers that year so I firmly believe that I had a couple of very special guardian angels looking out for me..... but I had to put all my faith in God's hands which isn't easy.... especially when you have too much knowledge in the medical field and you know very well what you are up against.
Stay strong and have faith.... You have such a huge group of fans that are supporting you and cheering you on. God bless you Shannon

  82. Hang in there Shannon. I will keep you in my prayers. Don't lose faith honey. I witnessed a miracle with my dad just a week ago. I assure you the only reason he is alive today is by the Grace of God. I truly believe an angel descended from heaven and carried him to safety. I know in my heart that God breathed life back into his body when he seized and stopped breathing right before my very eyes. I could not believe that I watched my dad die, but he gave me the common sense to administer CPR and stay calm. I know that God wrapped his arms around both of us and I have never been more relieved when he took a breath. Shannon know that God is in control no matter what. God is never late. He is always on time. He is with us when we least at expect it and when we need him the most. 2013 has been such a terrible year for so many people and it has been the second worst year of my adult life. I know the staff will keep us updated but trust in God that it will all work out.

  84. Shanon my daughter Sophia went on the Kidds kids trip last year she has a tumor on the left side of her pons and brainstem it is quite large and she had had many of the same problems you are having. She has had surgeries to fix areas of paralysis that are caused by pressure from the tumor on cranial nerves. She has had to take diamox for increased intracranial pressure, mri's every 3 months, and sees doctors in san Antonio, md anderson in houston, & Cincinnati childrens hospital. I tell you this because she is 6 and has lived knowing she has this for 4 of those years. She is a trooper and when i have been scared she comforts me. She has a understanding of life that some grown adults never get. One she has been through so much and so near to death that there is no doubt that God was holding her. Two her blind faith to believe this is like no others, she knows that God has het back and that is what gives me peace. Shanon i pray that God gives you strength to do more than you can do on your own and peace in you heart to know that when you can't GOD has your back. Thanks for all you do for Kidds kids.

  85. I've had 2 brain tumors called Meningiomas. Luckily, they were both benign as well. (Recurrent ones have the ability to be malignant) I know how scary this can be. Stay focused and positive, don't forget to breathe, listen to your docs. As unbelievable as it sounds brain surgery is not that painful! I left the hospital with tylenol for pain! You do need steroids too for a short period. The recovery period just so you know, will involved rest. The brain causes fatigue so even though you may wish to get back to work...you need to rest. The very best of luck to you Shannon!! God bless, you'll be just fine! On Halloween, I'll be a 6 year survivor. (Yay me!) Prayers coming your way!

  97. Shannon, will definitely keep you in prayer. Also wanted to let you know that my dad had a brain tumor that was located right in the center on his brain. It was the size of an egg and caused his to have a seizure, that's how we initially found out. He had the surgery to remove it and stayed in the hospital for about a month, and was back at work 3 months after. At first he couldn't walk, and had double vision, and lost a lot of words, but now he is back to himself.

  130. You have always shown yourself to be sincere, brave and strong as you've shared your life stories with us, mere listeners who feel like we're lifelong friends with all of you. And unselfish ??? Your photo is by the definition in the dictionary. Girl, if it were me, I'd be saying "forget Disney and Kidds' Kids trip - I'm sick!!!" But not you, you are putting all of them first when you should be the one being put first. As scarey and unknown as it all sounds right now, I believe you will make it through just fine. After your recovery time, I hope we get to see and hear more from you on the morning show. You're always funny, sincere and entertaining! Prayers are going up on your behalf and for the doctors and nurses who will be helping you through this. Stay calm and believe. Love to you "Little Sister". :)

  131. I understand the emotions that you are having. About six years ago I had an eye exam and had to return for another exam one week later or so and then I was sent to see a specialist and was ask about headaches and then was scheduled for an MRI of the brain and they found a tumor in the same area as you described. Seen a neurosurgeon and qas told I may have had it since I was a little girl and never knew it was there. The dr said he would go in to remove it but the possibility of making it through the procedure was slim due to the lcation of the tumor. All I could think of was my two girls and what would they do without me. And needless to say it is still there and I haven't had any problems as of today. Praise the good Lord. You are in my prayers. Everything is going to be fine.

  132. Has anyone set up a donation page to help Shanon defray the costs associated with this terrible situation (based on your OOP for the MRI, I'm thinking your insurance isn't amazing...) I would love to contribute if there is a way! Praying for you, Shanon!

  137. Some things to consider for post surgery from another brain surgery survivor.
After surgery you may need or want:
    1) lots of pillows- you may be told to sleep/sit at (at least) a 45 degree angle to help keep the swelling down
    2) a shower chair- this helps you feel secure while bathing and affords a bit of privacy
    3) vertigo medicine- if your eyesight is compromised from the tumor or swelling post surgery you may have double vision and feel dizzy when moving around or just trying to watch TV
    4) pudding cups- the vertigo might make you a bit nauseous (I loved my pudding cups!)
    5) different places to try to sleep- some nights are worse than others, just like some days. I found that just moving to a different room/bed/couch would occasionally help me to sleep a bit longer.
    6) HELP- you'll need a reliable helper to assist with the mundane daily tasks that you just can't do on your own. Someone to help with the mundane tasks, fetch, carry (you can't carry/lift ANYTHING over 5 lbs) driving you to appointments, sometimes just to fluff your pillows or bring you some PUDDING!! Or just to be another someone in the room!
    7) A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. My recovery was slow but steady. I still (1 year later) have visual deficits but they're manageable. Your brain is a MARVELOUS thing. It finds ways to fill in the gaps, help correct the missing links. Sometimes with weird results but don't let them alarm you. They do work themselves out in my experience.
Take good care. Keep the positive outweighing the negative. Be patient and FOLLOW Drs orders.
Prayers for guidance of your surgeons hands, for fast healing, health, and patience for you and your family!

  138. You and I spoke over the telephone after Hurricane Katrina when my team of folks at the hotel were doing a donation drive. Before we hung up the phone your words to me were "We need more people like you in this world." I would say the same for you Shannon. Hang in there and be stronger than you ever imagined was possible. YOU are an inspiration to so many people.

  159. Our prayers will be with you Shannon. Fear not, as The Big Man will be with you and protect you every step of the way. Everything happens for a reason in this life and the timing of this is no mistake. This is The Big Mans way of showing you that he will see that you will overcome this because you are meant to carry on the work that Kidd would want you to. Our prayers will be with you. Be strong and stand up to this thing, you can and will defeat it. It's Gods will.

  164. God, you owe us nothing but you can do anything. We are humble and small, and are reminded of it in moments where our life hangs in the balance just beyond the reach of our control, that we are in your hands and always have been. Father, may you give a grace of healing to Shanon, and bring her to relief and to peace. It is from no one but you, God, who we can ask and expect so much, and through Jesus Christ alone that we may come so boldly to your throne and ask for this mercy.

    Amen

With love for you, Shanon. Don't be afraid.

I am six months out from having my thyroid removed that was cancerous so I can relate to the shock, disbelief, but most of all knowing that I had my family and friends who rallied around me. You happen to have an extended family with all your fans that are thinking about you as well!
